Stromness Town Hall, 2, 10 Church Rd, Stromness KW16 3BA
Compiled and Directed by Sarah Jane Gibbon
In the centenary year of her birth this performance celebrates the work of Orcadian nature writer Bessie Skea. Known as the ‘Countrywoman’ and contributing columns to the local newspaper regularly alongside George Mackay Brown, she wrote about the world around her, nature, plants, the landscape and seascape. Living to some extent in the shadow or her friend George Mackay Brown her work has never been brought to the fore previously although it’s certainly deserving of attention. The event, which is devised and directed by her granddaughter Sarah Jane Gibbon, will bring together images, dramatisations of her work, recordings of Bessie’s own readings, songs based on her poetry and much more to form a celebration of this important voice and recorder of life in Orkney.
