Stravinsky The Rite of Spring
This concert features two large works by the foremost master of the piano duet medium: Schubert’s Divertissement from 1824 and one of the masterpieces from the last year of his life, the Fantasy in F minor. The latter is well known for its disarming calm which often gives way to more tempestuous outbursts.
The cracking of the earth in the ritual by Stravinsky is scored for large orchestra but in the hands of these two performers the size and scale of the raw and elemental work is unleashed in a thrilling and exciting demonstration of virtuosic pianism and the choreography of playing side by side at one instrument.
