Edvard Grieg Cello Sonata in A Minor Op. 36
A concert conjuring pictures and atmospheres starts with Janacek’s melancholic ‘fairy tale’ written after the death of his daughter. The Icelandic composer Jon Nordal’s work is a series of sound pictures inspired by poetry from his homeland and Grieg’s dramatic and sweeping sonata captures the essence of Norwegian romanticism filled with passion and folk-inspired fervour.
Geirþrúður Gudmunðsdottir has been a prize winner at numerous competitions, including the Anton Rubinstein International Cello Competition, Hellam Young Artist Competition, and the New York International Artists Association Competition. She was recently a semi-finalist at the Lutoslawski International Cello Competition. Antoine Préat is a rising star and was awarded the first prize of the Concours international d’Ile de France and the Los Angeles Colburn Piano Festival Competition.
This concert is being recorded for future broadcast on BBC Radio Classical Live.
