Beethoven wrote his early quartets for a Russian Count whose name adorns the set and they are vivid and dynamic pieces filled with typically Beethovenian contrasts and emotional changes of direction. Schumann’s quintet is regarded as one of the finest for this combination and was dedicated to his wife Clara who was to be the pianist at the premiere performance.
