Cal Flyn in conversation about her award-winning book  Islands of Abandonment.  The book investigates abandoned places: ghost towns and exclusion zones, no man’s lands and post-industrial hinterlands – and what happens when nature is allowed to reclaim its place.  Cal Flyn is the author of two nonfiction books, Thicker Than Water (2016) and Islands of Abandonment (2021). Islands of Abandonment has been shortlisted for a number of awards, including the Baillie Gifford Prize for nonfiction, the Wainwright Prize for writing on global conservation, and the Sunday Times Young Writer of the Year 2022. She writes about environmental issues and the ethics of conservation, and contributes to publications including GrantaThe Guardian and the Wall Street Journal. She lives in Stromness.
