Festival Chorus

The Festival Chorus is Orkney's own community choir which, each year, is given the unique chance to perform large scale choral works alongside top professional orchestra and soloists.

St Magnus Festival Chorus to perform Rossini under new Director

St Magnus International Festival is pleased to announce the appointment of Paul Rendall as the new director for the Festival Chorus. Paul left Orkney to train at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama and went on to sing extensively as a soloist as well as working with the chorus of Scottish Opera and then moving to Leeds to work at Opera North. Paul moved back to Orkney a couple of years ago and is currently vocal coach, as well as performing in, the KAOS production of The Beggar’s Opera.

For the 2018 Festival, the Festival Chorus will be performing the colourful Petite Messe Solennelle by Rossini; a composer best known for his operas, this is a colourful and engaging work. Chorus rehearsals take place on Monday nights at King Street Halls, Kirkwall and these will start on Monday 26th February at 7.15. The Chorus is an un-auditioned group and new members are always welcome to come along.

Each year the Chorus performs in the Festival after several months of preparation and the performances have been regularly broadcast on BBC Radio 3. Last year the performance even made it to Norwegian Radio. For the 2018 Festival the Chorus will be joined by SONORO and the eminent choral conductor Neil Ferris.
